Billionaire Elon Musk announced the relocation of SpaceX and his social media company, X, from California to Texas. Musk posted on X on Tuesday that SpaceX’s headquarters will move from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, and X’s headquarters will shift from San Francisco to Austin.

Musk cited a new law signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday, which prohibits school districts from requiring staff to inform parents about their child’s gender identification changes, as the “final straw.”

“I did make it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that laws of this nature would force families and companies to leave California to protect their children,” Musk wrote.

In 2021, Musk’s company Tesla moved its corporate headquarters to Austin from Palo Alto, California. Musk has also relocated his residence from California to Texas, where there is no state personal income tax.

Musk reiterated his opposition to the new Californian law, which he believes unjustly restricts parental knowledge about their children’s gender identities. “This is the last straw,” he wrote on social media.

The businessman, who had already moved Tesla’s headquarters to Texas in 2021 following threats over Covid-era lockdowns, has become increasingly involved in U.S. politics. Over the weekend, he formally endorsed Donald Trump for president and is reportedly directing $45 million a month towards Trump’s campaign, although Musk dismissed the report with a post of “fake news” on X.

The debate over what schools should disclose to parents about their children’s gender identities is a significant issue in the U.S. LGBTQ advocates argue that students have a right to privacy, while others believe parents should be informed about such matters.

Musk, who has a transgender daughter, has previously stated that he “supports trans” but has expressed frustration with pronouns, describing them as an “aesthetic nightmare.” Last year, he said he would advocate for criminalizing transgender medical treatments for minors, which he referred to as causing “severe, irreversible changes.”

“Because of this law and the many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas,” Musk stated in his post on X, emphasizing his prior opposition to the bill.
