According to the Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Elon Musk, the company is “very close” to achieving level 5 autonomous driving technology, referring to the capability of driving through roads without any driver input.
Elon Musk said in a video message at the opening of Shanghai’s annual World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), “I’m extremely confident that level 5 or essentially complete autonomy will happen and I think will happen very quickly.” He also added, “I remain confident that we will have the basic functionality for level 5 autonomy complete this year.”
Currently various automakers and tech companies like Waymo, Alphabet, Uber are investing billions of dollars to make the autonomous technology a much improved piece of tech. However, the industry insiders think, it would still take some time for the technology to get ready completely and public to trust the technology fully.
For now, Tesla makes cars with autopilot driver assistance system. Musk also added, the organization is also developing a new heat projection or cooling systems in order to enable much more advanced computers in cars. According to a recent industry data, Tesla sold as much as 15,000 China- made Model 3 sedans in the last month.
The California based automaker has become the most valued automaker as its shares surged to record highs and its market capitalisation overtook that of former front-runner Toyota Motors Corp.
