Breaking Barriers and Building Futures

Afreen’s story is rooted in resilience and is one of grit, vision, and purpose. As a first-generation professional from Pune, her journey wasn’t paved with privilege—it was carved through persistence. Afreen vividly recalls late nights spent teaching herself to code with borrowed books. Growing up in an environment with limited resources, she didn’t see obstacles; she saw opportunities waiting to be shaped. Without a clear roadmap, Afreen relied on her unwavering curiosity and drive to build one. Every challenge became a steppingstone, and every step brought her closer to redefining what’s possible. This sense of purpose shaped her journey as a technologist and product leader.

“I’ve learned that where you come from doesn’t define where you can go. It’s the questions you ask, the risks you take, and the grit you summon that shape the path forward. When you don’t have a safety net, every move feels like a leap of faith. But those leaps taught me how to fly,” she reflects.

Afreen’s career exemplifies that vision and determination can rewrite even the most rigid narratives. But Afreen’s impact goes beyond building solutions—it’s about building ecosystems and pathways where talent and potential can thrive in the digital age.

At Northwestern University, she became a pivotal force in creating inclusive learning environments. Working in learning labs designed to dismantle barriers in education, Afreen didn’t just innovate; she fostered community. She mentored underrepresented students, offering them not just guidance but the tools and confidence to succeed on their own terms.

“Mentorship isn’t about handing over answers; it’s about helping someone see their own power to find solutions,” she says. Her approach combines empathy and strategy—recognizing both the systemic challenges individuals face and the unique strengths they bring.

Afreen’s work in these labs wasn’t confined to research; it was about amplifying voices that often go unheard.

Through her efforts, Afreen helped turn these spaces into incubators for bold ideas and diverse talent.

Leading with Conviction

Leadership, to Afreen, is about clarity and purpose. “It’s about making decisions with conviction, owning the outcomes, and showing others that it’s okay to take bold steps even when the path isn’t clear. Afreen shares, “Leadership is deeply personal to me. It’s about inspiring confidence, not just in the mission but in the individuals who drive it forward. I don’t just set goals; I craft narratives. It’s about showing people that their work is not just valuable—it’s essential.” Afreen’s leadership style connects individual contributions to a larger vision.

“The best leaders don’t have all the answers—they ask the best questions. They challenge, they listen, and they inspire others to think bigger than they thought possible.”

Afreen also believes in leading with a mix of empathy and unshakable focus—listening deeply to understand challenges but always steering toward the bigger picture.

She says, “I think humor is a secret weapon; it humanizes leadership and reminds people that even in high-pressure environments, there’s room for connection and levity.”

She shares, “When you lead with compassion, people don’t just work harder—they work smarter because they believe in what they’re building.”

Shipping Mission-Driven Products

Afreen’s journey in shipping mission-driven products is rooted in her belief that technology should create ripple effects of positive change.

“I’m fascinated by the intersection of purpose and possibility. Products are more than tools; they’re catalysts for change. The idea that something I create can ripple outward, improving lives or reshaping industries, is what keeps me inspired,” she says.

“It’s not about chasing trends—it’s about staying relentlessly curious. What could be better? What isn’t being said? Staying motivated comes from never being fully satisfied with the status quo and always wondering what’s next.”

Afreen believes that the heart of technology lies in its ability to connect people—to their goals, to each other, and to what’s possible. She aims to push the boundaries of what technology can achieve, especially in shaping smarter, more ethical systems.

Building from Scratch: The Art of Turning Ideas into Reality

Afreen’s academic background includes degrees from Northwestern University, where she earned a master’sdegree in computer science with a minor in Engineering Management, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she earned an executive education degree in design thinking. At Northwestern University, she earned accolades like the Peter and Adrienne Barris Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award.

She has managed multiple high-value initiatives that touched different facets of the business. Her ability to ship mission-driven products that make a tangible difference has been central to her career. Her time at Xelpmoc Design & Tech, Goalster, and Verkada exemplifies this mindset.

Afreen worked closely with founders and C-suite leaders to launch 0-1 products that aligned vision with execution. “There’s something thrilling about building from scratch—it’s where creativity meets strategy in its purest form.”

“Building something from nothing is equal parts exhilarating and terrifying, and that’s exactly why I love it. The best ideas are the ones that feel impossible until they’re not. What excites me is the process of refining chaos into clarity, turning fragments of an idea into something tangible that people can see, touch, and use. It’s not just about the end product; it’s about the journey of discovery and iteration.”

“I’m not here to fit in; I’m here to shape the narrative. Technology should challenge us to do better, be better, and create better systems for everyone.”

Driving Diversity in Tech

As a TEDx speaker and advocate for STEM education, Afreen has inspired thousands of women to pursue technology careers. She has shared insights on topics such as economic development for developing nations such as India, India’s readiness for AI technologies, and women’s inclusion in tech. Through initiatives like Coding Girls and Women in Tech, Afreen has empowered over 100,000 women to break into male-dominated fields.

“Breaking barriers isn’t enough—you have to replace them with bridges. That’s how you create lasting change.” Afreen adds, “I’m focused on mentoring and amplifying diverse voices in tech because the future should be built by everyone, for everyone. My focus has always been on leveraging expertise for meaningful change. Leadership transcends boardrooms and codebases; it’s about creating ecosystems of empowerment.”

Her impact, however, extends beyond technology and education; her humanitarian work includes founding an animal shelter in Pune, which has rescued and treated over 5,000 stray animals.

Innovation: Asking Hard Questions

Innovation, to Afreen, is about asking the hard questions.

“Staying ahead means never settling for surface-level understanding. I immerse myself in the ‘why’ behind trends—reading research, engaging with thought leaders, and constantly testing new ideas. For me, it’s not about chasing the next shiny thing; it’s about anticipating how technology will evolve and aligning it with real-world needs.”

Her approach involves asking the tough questions that others might shy away from:

“What are we overlooking? How could this go wrong?” She shares that curiosity and skepticism make all the difference.

Balancing Work and Passion

“I don’t see work and life as opposing forces—they’re intertwined. My approach is to be fully present in whatever I’m doing, whether it’s brainstorming on a design solution or riding a wave while surfing. I’ve learned the importance of carving out space for myself through mindfulness, exploring new places, or simply unplugging for a while. To me, balance isn’t simply about dividing time equally; it’s about giving your energy to what matters most in that moment.”

Afreen finds creative outlets like storytelling and surfing essential. “My goal is to keep creating— groundbreaking products, meaningful connections, or artistic expressions. I’ve been working on becoming a stronger surfer—it’s humbling, exhilarating, and a constant reminder that mastery is a journey, not a destination. I also try to dedicate more time to my creative side, exploring art and storytelling, because they offer a unique perspective you can’t achieve through logic or analysis alone. Achieving a balance between technological innovation and human expression is a goal that keeps me grounded and excited.”

A Vision for the Future

Afreen envisions product management evolving from building features to architecting ecosystems.

“The role of product management is on the brink of transformation. As technology like generative AI accelerates innovation cycles, PMs will need to evolve from feature managers to ecosystem architects. The focus will shift from building isolated products to creating interconnected systems that adapt and grow with users.

The role will also demand a shift from linear thinking to system thinking. Products will no longer exist in isolation; they’ll be part of complex, adaptive ecosystems. PMs will need to design with scalability, interoperability, and longevity in mind. And while AI will handle a lot of the ‘how,’ the ‘why’ will remain firmly human.

At the same time, ethical responsibility will become paramount, ensuring these powerful tools are used to elevate, not exploit. The future of product management will belong to those who can bridge technology and humanity with boldness, creativity, and integrity.”

A Legacy of Impact

Afreen Bhumgara’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of vision, curiosity, and determination. Afreen’s advice for aspiring leaders? “Stay curious and hands-on. Learn how things work beneath the surface—not because you need to be an engineer, but because understanding the machinery makes you a better architect.

Growth happens when you challenge the status quo, take risks, and embrace the possibility of failure. The best PM’s and leaders aren’t just adaptable; they’re relentless in their pursuit of what’s next. And never forget humility and curiosity will take you further than any roadmap.”

Afreen’s ability to combine her technical expertise with a deep understanding of human needs has shaped her legacy as a product leader and innovator. Her educational leadership and hands-on activism underscores her as a powerful force for meaningful change and someone with a multi-dimensional impact.
