Amazon and Iberdrola Expand Clean Energy Partnership with Major Offshore Wind Deal

Amazon and Iberdrola

Amazon and Iberdrola have significantly advanced their global clean energy partnership through a landmark power purchase agreement (PPA) for the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm in the UK. This agreement, which involves the procurement of 159 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, will provide Amazon with approximately 700 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. The East Anglia THREE project, set to become operational by 2026, will be the world’s second-largest offshore wind farm, generating enough power to supply 1.3 million British homes.

The 1.4 gigawatt (GW) East Anglia THREE wind farms will feature 95 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 MW turbines, located 69 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk. The project is expected to create over 2,300 jobs during construction and sustain around 100 long-term positions throughout its operational life. This development marks a substantial addition to Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio, which already includes 54,000 GWh of renewable energy contracted globally from Iberdrola.

The announcement took place at the Haizea Wind Group facility in Bilbao, where 50 monopiles for the wind farm are currently being manufactured. These components will be shipped to the UK to support the wind turbines. This investment aligns with Amazon’s commitment to sourcing 100% of its operational electricity from renewable sources by 2025, advancing the company’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon by 2040.

In addition to the clean energy agreement, Amazon and Iberdrola have launched the global “Journey to Cloud” programme. This initiative will see Iberdrola’s operations further migrated to AWS Cloud services, enhancing big data capabilities and leveraging AWS’s High-Performance Computing services. Notable advancements include the use of AWS for weather simulation optimization and the integration of Amazon SageMaker for maximizing renewable energy asset efficiency.

Furthermore, ScottishPower, an Iberdrola company, is employing an Internet of Things (IoT) platform to refine its Low Voltage network in the UK, while both companies explore the use of generative AI through Amazon Bedrock to enhance customer experiences and support field operations.

Sergio Hernández de Deza, Director of Large Customers and Industrial Solutions at Iberdrola, emphasized the partnership’s impact, stating, “This agreement will lead to increased energy independence, job creation, and lower emissions, reinforcing the drive towards sustainability and competitiveness.”

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, noting, “By enabling renewable projects worldwide and integrating advanced technologies, we are making substantial progress towards our Climate Pledge commitment and supporting global clean energy transitions.”
