At its core, Konner’s strategy relies on data-driven decisions to propel urban development forward. This entails harnessing the power of technology to collect, analyze, and interpret vast amounts of data pertaining to various aspects of city life. Whether it’s transportation patterns, carbon emissions mitigation, or resident feedback, Konner understands that data holds invaluable insights that can inform and guide decision-making processes.

Last year, Konner worked with the Center for Public Impact, Beeck Center, and Google.org on a national initiative to address challenges local governments face when engaging residents in troubleshooting they ways they navigate mobility. The project aimed to create an AI tool to address limited access to mobility data and the over-surveying of residents. Konner worked with community partner, Eastside Community Network (ECN), to develop a data-driven, interactive dashboard map and report tool that shares mobility data and trends to support the city in over-surveying communities.

The dashboard is being developed to allow residents, mobility advocates, and city staff to easily access critical information, preventing further surveying residents on issues that have either already been addressed or they have engaged in.

Konner utilizes technology to optimize city operations and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. He also emphasizes the importance of qualitative insights, such as understanding the cultural nuances and social dynamics that shape community behavior throughout the diverse demographic of Detroit neighborhoods. By integrating qualitative research methods alongside quantitative data analysis, Konner ensures a more nuanced and holistic understanding of urban challenges and opportunities.

Navigating Challenges and Fostering Innovation

Konner’s team at the Office of Mobility Innovation is inherently innovative, but they often face challenges with procuring and implementing new technologies. The City of Detroit is committed to learning from the challenges other cities experience in piloting new technologies and taking a cautionary approach to ensuring the introduction of innovations are thoroughly investigated for safety and sustainable reliability in all use cases. This is often due to concerns in adopting new frontiers Konner addresses these challenges by prioritizing consistent communication, transparency and trust-building with other City departments, public and private project stakeholder and residents to foster collaboration and overcome obstacles.

Detroiters have a history in bringing creative solutions to micro-mobility, the emergence of the EV industry, traffic safety and data analysis, urban planning, climate sustainability, decarbonization, prototyping new technologies, etc. Due to the nature of the work, cross collaboration internally and with government and community partners is active and necessary to build toward a cohesive vision of the city’s mobility ecosystem.

After a pilot has concludes, the next step is collaborative decision-making on if the project will live on under municipal stewardship or empowering the private sector to sustain efforts in Detroit’s advancement with continued support by the City administration.
