OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, have announced their next AI model—GPT-4o—which builds upon GPT-4 and takes things to the next level. The update was unveiled during OpenAI’s May 13 spring update event, interestingly just a day before Google is set to officially announce its own AI updates and plans at the Google I/O 2024 developer conference.

GPT-4o is touted as being both faster and more efficient than GPT-4, offering notable improvements across text, vision, and audio capabilities, according to OpenAI’s claims. The new AI model will be rolled out iteratively to all ChatGPT users for free, with some of the text and image capabilities becoming available immediately. OpenAI states that because the new model is so efficient, it is able to provide it to non-paying ChatGPT users as well. Paying customers will, of course, receive extra benefits, including ramped-up capacity.

During the livestream on Monday, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said, “The updated model is much faster and improves capabilities across text, vision, and audio.” Murati further added, “It’ll be free for all users, and paid users will continue to have up to five times the capacity limits of free users.”

The new GPT-4o boasts expanded language support, now proficient in about 50 languages. Additionally, ChatGPT 4.0 has gained the ability to analyze charts, further enhancing its capabilities to assist users with a wide range of needs.

Notably, OpenAI has prioritized performance optimization, resulting in a twofold increase in speed and a significant reduction in deployment costs, making GPT-4o 50% more economical for users.

With the introduction of a dedicated desktop application, users can now seamlessly incorporate GPT-4o into their workflows by uploading documents and screenshots. The new AI’s memory functionality ensures continuity in conversations, while the ability to browse information directly improves interactions. GPT-4o promises to bring a faster version of human-to-machine interaction, offering a better and more natural way of interaction than earlier versions of ChatGPT.

At the OpenAI ChatGPT event, users were also introduced to the desktop version of ChatGPT, making it easier for users to seamlessly integrate ChatGPT into their workplace. Murati explained that the new UI could make ChatGPT more interactive for users. The latest GPT-4o will be gradually rolled out over the coming weeks.
