Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has announced a strategic collaboration with Google to bolster user privacy through a secure cloud computing solution. The partnership, revealed on March 3, 2025, will see Oppo integrate Google’s Confidential Computing software into its AI offerings, ensuring that sensitive user data remains protected and is not accessible for AI training purposes.
Oppo’s new privacy initiative, dubbed the Private Computing Cloud, will encrypt user data, safeguarding personal information such as private calls and browser searches from external access. This move mirrors similar privacy-focused efforts by Apple, which introduced its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) system in 2024 to protect user data from its own AI processing.
Through this collaboration, Oppo aims to address growing concerns over privacy as AI becomes more integrated into consumer technology. Oppo’s Private Computing Cloud will also support new features, including call summarization, search, and image generation, offering users enhanced AI capabilities while ensuring data security.
Oppo’s existing partnership with Google, which sees the integration of Google’s Gemini foundation models into its AI features, is pivotal to this privacy push. The company is also working towards integrating Google’s next-generation Gemini 2.0 AI model, an agentic system designed to autonomously complete tasks on behalf of users. This update is expected to enhance features like voice transcription and call translation in Oppo’s apps, such as Notes, Calendar, and Clock.
As one of China’s largest smartphone manufacturers, Oppo holds a significant market share, with 14% in the final quarter of 2024. The company’s privacy-driven AI strategy aims to expand its reach, with a target of bringing generative AI features to 100 million users by the end of 2025. This move signals Oppo’s ambition to establish itself as a leader in AI-integrated smartphones while prioritizing user data protection in an increasingly privacy-conscious market.
