The supermarket-based retailer Walmart has kicked off a 3-week sales event for the purpose of growing its Walmart+ members. Walmart+ is a premium subscription service that offers prescription discounts, fuel discounts, free shipping on online orders, and free delivery of groceries as a package.
The move comes as Walmart’s attempt to compete with Amazon to emerge as the largest player in the supermarkets segment. According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), about 25% of Walmart users are Walmart+ members as of now. The company is trying to increase this number by offering attractive discounts and exclusive perks during the sales event.
The program costs $12.95 a month or $98 on a yearly basis and debuted in September 2020. Walmart’s CEO Doug Mcmillon said that the retailer is focused on adding more membership benefits and delivering a great customer experience to boost their sales.
